It’s easy to see why this tree is so popular—its uniquely colored delicate bark naturally peels to expose beautiful flakes of cinnamon and can be seen boosting the character of landscapes anywhere from the Deep South to the Great Lakes! The cinnamon-colored, exfoliating bark of the River Birch is what makes it a spectacular addition to landscapes in the winter. The River Birch features lustrous, medium-green leaves and it is the most Hardy Birch. The River Birch is tolerant of both wet soils and dry summers and will grow up to 80 feet tall. Its life is short compared to most trees, but it grows fast. River Birch does not do well in shade, a characteristic of “pioneer” species (plants that are the first to colonize an open habitat) so be sure to plant this tree in an area fully exposed to lots of sunlight. River Birch fruit is a cone, a little over an inch long. The cone is filled with hairy seeds that travel by wind and water. It is the only spring-fruiting birch and the only native birch whose range includes the southeastern coastal plain. More Detail: Botanical Name: Betula nigra Sun Light: Full Sun Foliage Color: Green Mature Height: 40-80 ft Mature Width: 20-30 ft Growing Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

  • Large grow zone; River Birch are tough and resilient trees and are able to thrive in a wide array of conditions. These plants have hardiness in zones 4-9, so they are accustomed to growing both cold and warm environments.
  • Fall color; River Birch put on an impressive color display in the fall season with their foliage changing to brilliant shades of yellow. These trees are deciduous and love their leaves in the winter.
  • Towering heights; This tree specimen is known for growing quite tall in optimal conditions. Mature River Birch can reach heights as tall as 80 feet and get 20-30 feet wide.
  • Iconic bark; These birch trees are covered with unique, showy bark which naturally peels through out the year to show varying colors of white and cinnamon.
  • Semi-aquatic; River Birch get their name from their ability to grow well near bodies of water. These trees can be seen in the wild growing on the banks of rivers, streams, and near lakes.
